Once I was a clever boy learning the arts of Oxford... is a quotation from the verses written by Bishop Richard Fleming (c.1385-1431) for his tomb in Lincoln Cathedral. Fleming, the founder of Lincoln College in Oxford, is the subject of my research for a D. Phil., and, like me, a son of the West Riding. I have remarked in the past that I have a deeply meaningful on-going relationship with a dead fifteenth century bishop... it was Fleming who, in effect, enabled me to come to Oxford and to learn its arts, and for that I am immensely grateful.

Forty Hours at the Oxford Oratory October 14th -16th


This is the programme for the annual Forty Hours Devotion at the Oxford Oratory over the weekend of October 14th -16th.

FRIDAY 14th OCTOBER:

6pm Solemn Mass of Exposition in the Extraordinary Form

Adoration until Midnight, followed by Compline with the Dominicans of Blackfriars and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament

SATURDAY 15th OCTOBER:

ALL NIGHT VIGIL

Refreshments will be available in the Parish Centre all night

5am Matins & Lauds of the Blessed Sacrament

with the Sisters of the Work from Littlemore

6am Mass in the Extraordinary Form

Exposition resumes through the day with a break for

10am Mass

6.30pm Mass for Peace with hymns

Exposition resumes until

12 Midnight The Blessed Sacrament is reposed

SUNDAY 16th OCTOBER:

8am Mass in the Extraordinary Form

9.30am Parish Mass

11am Solemn Mass of the Sacred Heart

After which Exposition resumes until

5pm Solemn Vespers of the Blessed Sacrament,

Procession and Benediction

6.30pm Evening Mass
