Once I was a clever boy learning the arts of Oxford... is a quotation from the verses written by Bishop Richard Fleming (c.1385-1431) for his tomb in Lincoln Cathedral. Fleming, the founder of Lincoln College in Oxford, is the subject of my research for a D. Phil., and, like me, a son of the West Riding. I have remarked in the past that I have a deeply meaningful on-going relationship with a dead fifteenth century bishop... it was Fleming who, in effect, enabled me to come to Oxford and to learn its arts, and for that I am immensely grateful.

Plenary Indulgence for the Feast of St Philip Neri

In celebration of the 500th year of our Holy Father's birth, the Apostolic Penitentiary, His Eminence Cardinal Piacenza, has granted a plenary indulgence in all churches of the Congregation of the Oratory for St Philip's Day this year (25th-26th May).

The indulgence may be gained by all the faithful under the usual conditions of sacramental confession, Holy Communion and prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. To gain the indulgence, a pilgrimage to our church must be made, or one should take part in a service or devotion in honour of St Philip Neri, concluding by saying the Our Father and Creed and invoking the Blessed Virgin and St Philip.

The indulgence may be applied to the faithful departed.

The Indulgence of the Portiuncula

Tomorrow is the dayon which the faithful can obtain the indulgence of the Portiuncula. We were reminded of this at Mass at the Oxford Oratory this evening (this evening also counts as part of the day on which the indulgence can be obtained)  Originally associated with Assisi this has become one that is extended to the whole church as Fr Tim Finigan points out in his post Portiuncula indulgence tomorrow (and indulgences generally)

Gaining the plenary indulgence is achieved by patying adevout viist to aparish church, reciting the Creed and Lord's Prayer, together with prayer for the Pope's intention, confession and reception of the Eucharist.

With time spent this evening at church and with confession tomorrow I hope to gain the indulgence.

Plenary Indulgences

Fr Tim Finigan has started his posts on The Hermeneutic of Continuity this year with an extremely useful guide as to how to obtain Plenary Indulgences, both on a day by day basis and on particular days. For those he provides a list of both fixed days and variable anniversaries. It can be read at Plenary indulgences for particular days.

I missed out on January 1st, but his list gives a quick guide for planning ahead, as well as providing for obtaining a Plenary Indulgence as part of one's regular spiritual discipline. It is the sort of information that would not come amiss in the porch of every church.
