Hexham Abbey - strictly speaking the foundation was a priory in the high and later medieval centuries - is amongst my favourite surviving medieval monastic churches. It is not only a beautiful building rich in history but it has also preserved a remarkable range of carved and decorated woodwork from the late middle ages.
A recent rediscovery in the triforium of what appears to be a long missing panel of a series of figures representing the ‘Dance of Death’ and dated to circa 1500. This in itself is a unique survival in this country. The finding of the panel has led to a scientific examination which appears to confirm that it is indeed that drawn by an early historian of the church.
The discovery is written up in an illustrated article on mediaevalists.net, and which can be seen at Lost Medieval Painting Rediscovered at Hexham Abbey
It also has a link to the article in the Hexham Historian it is based upon.
