I chanced online upon a report from the Daily Express website about the discovery at the Roman fort and associated settlement at Vindolanda, which lies behind Hadrian’s Wall, of the remains of a sixth century chalice. This is an item from perhaps two centuries after the fort was abandoned by the military but the site was, it appears, still clearly used by the post-Roman, Romano-British population as a centre for worship. Romanitas and Christianity still went hand in hand.
