Once I was a clever boy learning the arts of Oxford... is a quotation from the verses written by Bishop Richard Fleming (c.1385-1431) for his tomb in Lincoln Cathedral. Fleming, the founder of Lincoln College in Oxford, is the subject of my research for a D. Phil., and, like me, a son of the West Riding. I have remarked in the past that I have a deeply meaningful on-going relationship with a dead fifteenth century bishop... it was Fleming who, in effect, enabled me to come to Oxford and to learn its arts, and for that I am immensely grateful.

The Devotion begins with Solemn Mass in the Extraordinary Form at 6 on Friday, with Compline and Benediction at Midnight with the Oxford Dominicans. There follows a Vigil with the saying of the Rosary until Mattins and Laud at 5 with the Sisters of the Work from Littlemore. This will be followed at 6 by a second Extraordinary Form Mass for the feast of St Edward the Confessor.

Exposition continues through Saturday, with Low Mass at 10 and the Mass for Peace at 6.30, and Exposition is then resumed until Midnight.

On Sunday the Masses are at the usual times of 8 (Extraordinary Form), 9.30 and 11, with Exposition resumed during the afternoon. The 40 Hours concludes with Solemn Vespers, Procession of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction at 5.

This is an important opportunity for devotion to Our Lord in His Eucharistic Presence and very well worth attending.
