On April 6th 1580 there occurred an earthquake beneath the Straits of Dover that was one of the most severe recorded in the region. Fairly severe ones appear to occur there about every two hundred years - the most recent being in 1950, so not too worrying at present.vLoss of life and damage was reported and shocks were experienced across southern England, in northern France and in Flanders, and even felt in Scotland.
